Sea air, wind and sun have action on many building materials, which should be avoided or properly specified for homes and apartments on the coast. This is the case with steel. According to architect Selma Tammaro, holder of the Tammaro Architecture office, the stainless steel used in gates or railings should be 316. Another solution is sliding steel, also known by the Corten brand. Both feature superior corrosion resistance.

“Depending on the treatment required by other types of steel, the value goes up, which makes the cost-effectiveness of stainless steel favorable. It is a noble steel, with excellent aesthetic appearance ”, comments. Among metals, aluminum is ideal for coastal use. PVC framing is also a welcome solution as it does not suffer any damage in this environment.

For architects João Frederico Pareto Conrado and Gabriel Novaes Ceravolo, partners at the Conrado Ceravolo Architects office, no material should be avoided in coastal works, but all should be applied correctly. “For example, metal structures need to be given high performance paints, and concrete has to be made with corrosion inhibiting additives as well as greater coating to prevent steel exposure. Taking the right care, nothing is prohibited, and the client must understand which preventive work should be done, what the cost and which alternatives, ”they argue.
